Concentration Check Up

My concentration is skulls and bones but I've taken it toward the more serious perspective rather than trying to incorporate humor into it like I did at first. At the moment, I am stuck and am not sure what to do next. I feel like my repetition and layering of bones has been working, it's just the fact that my pieces do not look complete is frustrating. I am also trying to simplify my pieces because I've been told I try to complicate my pieces too much.

This is my piece from out last critique. From the comments I got on this, it seems like people do not think it looks complete, but they like the contrast. I'm not really sure where to go with this one because I'm not sure how to make it look more complete. Also, I'm not a big fan of the black on the left side and I want to find a way to make that look better. I think it is too bold and just isn't working.

If anyone has any suggestions for ideas on what I should do for my next piece or how I should improve this piece please let me know! Thanks!

  1. I like your humorous part but this works as well. This piece just looks like you didn't like it so its unfinished. Your other piece for the last critique was really fun, it had nice color and though it wasn't as simple it looks like you enjoyed making it a little more. You should try adding something unexpected like the water color on the other piece to finish this one.

  2. I think that you could do a lot with your concentration! I like your humor peices too but if you want to move away from that you have to make sure you keep your peices interesting somehow. Your most resent work is good! I like how you zoomed in on the bones and think you should move in that direction. Maybe photograph some fake ones to get inspiration? You are also very good at layering so sick with that. :) hope this helps!

  3. I really love your line quality and the little details you put in, and I agree with Ranya! I think experimenting with adding color could help you have more fun with it, and to fill in spaces that to the viewer maybe look like you just didn't get to. Maybe to build off the repetitious thing, you could do a sketch, gesso half-opaquely over it, then layer on others, maybe contoured or something?
